Historic Fact: It was through the efforts of Virginia Legislator, St. Clair Ballard, that the county was named for Daniel Boone, for he had rescued Ballard's mother from Indians and reared her as his own child. Daniel Boone made his home in the Kanawha valley from 1788 to 1795.
